- A metallurgical microscope, also known as a metallographic microscope, or simply as a metallograph, has the distinct capability of imaging a smooth metallic, ceramic, silicon wafer, or other flat polished surface. These epi-illumination instruments allow light to go through the microscope objective, and reflect off the metallic or opaque specimen, and back to the eyepieces. This compares to a standard compound light microscope that has only transmission illumination, which limits the microscopist to only using thin translucent specimens. If you need both features, several of our microscopesm have the ability to do both transmitted light as well as epi-illumination.
